Volatiles on Mars

چکیده

Compared to Earth’s atmosphere, Mars has a thin CO2-rich atmosphere with a surface pressure of about 700 Pa. When normalized to planetary mass (mass of Mars is 10.7% of that of Earth), the abundance of volatiles on Mars is about 0.07% to 6% of that on Earth (when CO2 in terrestrial carbonates is included). Is the depletion of volatiles on Mars a primary feature (because less volatiles accreted on Mars than on Earth), or a secondary feature (due to lower degree of degassing or due to gas escape to outer space)? In this contribution, I outline a simple model for volatile budgets of Mars, and implications for water on Mars.

Sulfur-induced greenhouse warming on early Mars

[1] Mineralogical, geological, geophysical, and isotopic data recently returned from Mars suggest that the delivery of sulfur gases to the atmosphere may have played a significant role in the planet’s early evolution. Using the Gusev Crater basalt composition and a batch melting model, we obtain a high sulfur solubility, approximately 1400 ppm, in Martian mantle melts. We proceed to explore dif...

Atmospheric chemistry of nitrogen on Mars: A link between oxidants in the soil and chlorine cycling

NO and NO2, collectively denoted NOx, are generated in the Earth’s atmosphere mainly from the photochemistry of biogenic nitrogen-containing gases whereas on Mars they form through the oxidation of products derived from ionospheric dissociation of N2. NOx disappears from both atmospheres when acids form from further oxidation and deposit to the surface. We show that peroxynitric acid (PNA), HO2...

Mars at very low obliquity: Atmospheric collapse and the fate of volatiles

[1] The obliquity of the Martian spin axis is known to undergo quasiperiodic oscillations superposed over chaotic long-term variations. It is probable that within past history there were geologically long periods when the obliquity oscillated around low (10–15 ) mean values. During such low obliquity epochs the climate system is controlled by deposition of permanent solid CO2 deposits in the po...
